SSNEC:
The Sacramento Sierra Norwegian Elkhound Club, Inc. was started November 19,1992, by a small group of elkhound fanciers that were interested in preserving, protecting, and advancing the Norwegian Elkhound breed. The membership has steadily grown since then and now has approximately 30 members.
Our club gained sanction from the American Kennel Club as a fully licensed breed club in 1999. We have held a Regional Norwegian Elkhound Specialty show every October since 2000. We have also put on conformation, obedience, and rally fun matches as a service to the dog community. We have held Canine Good Citizen tests, nail trimming clinics, and participated in DNA sampling studies. In addition, we have visited schools with our dogs to help educate children on how to care for dogs.
Our members are involved in conformation shows and obedience trials, tracking tests and agility competitions, and animal assisted therapy. Our membership includes a licensed breed judge, a licensed tracking judge, a professional handler, two professional groomers, several breeders, and just regular folk who love Norwegian elkhounds. Our members have served other local, regional, and national dog clubs in many different capacities.
SSNEC has a very active rescue program where Norwegian elkhounds needing a new home are matched up with potential adopters. We have placed over fifty elkhounds in new homes over the last twelve years.
Membership meetings are generally held on the third Thursday of each month. We welcome new members that are interested and willing to work toward the goals of the Club and who love the Norwegian elkhound. Please contact our club president at
